Recently elected as county auditor, David Troester never thought he would run for any kind of political office. “At first, I didn’t feel that I was qualified,” said Troester in an interview. But after receiving encouragement from fellow citizens and giving it some careful thought, he came to realize that he actually was. Earlier in his life, Troester served as a supply sergeant in the Army, which helped him realize, “That is accounting, pure and simple.”
As explained in the What’s a County Auditor? article found on this website, the county auditor has to be a jack of all trades. Troester believes one of his most important roles is serving as the chief election official for the county. He stated, “The reason for that is because that is the foundation of what separates us (Americans) from everybody else.” When you put it into perspective, he’s absolutely right. “If you go back to 1776 and you think about what made America a different form of government, it was the right and the will of the people to have a say.” As county auditor, Troester gets to help maintain that right—an undeniably important role to carry.
Through all of Troester’s different responsibilities as county auditor, his favorite part of serving is the impact he has on the rest of the county. When asked about his favorite part of the job, Troester said, “Knowing that I’ve left the office each day and had a positive influence on somebody’s life and how the county is run.”
At the end of the interview, Troester outlined why he chooses to stand with the Republican Party. “I’m a conservative socially, I’m a conservative fiscally, and those are both very strong Republican leanings,” he explained. Having lived outside Clinton County for a large portion of his life, Troester noted a difference in economic development compared to other parts of the state. “That’s what the push to four-lane Highway 30 is about, and to some extent, that’s what the talk of wind turbines is about.” On local, state, and national levels, Troester believes in Republican solutions.
